We recently completed our first company catalog and needed to print thousands of copies to send out to contractors. Journal Graphics worked closely with us to make sure the end product was exactly what we wanted and developed a virtual version of the catalog for our website. Its is unfortunate that this company treats customers the way they have treated colleagues of mine. Use extreme caution if you choose to use the company - they will CENSOR YOUR CONTENT then REFUSE to print after editing. They accepted a short run, event based magazine job (they had printed previously) and provided a hard proof last weds, then asked for curse words to be censored and images removed (including a drawing of a logo that had illustrated boobies).
My colleagues reluctantly complied and provided updated files on friday, due to a tight timeline. Then on the following monday Journal Graphics responded saying that they refuse to publish the magazine at all. Resulting in almost a full week of production time lost - possibly resulting in the magazine not meeting the deadline of the event audience intended. We are now looking for a responsible and up-front and honest printer open to FREEDOM OF SPEECH. We will never use this company again.
My colleagues reluctantly complied and provided updated files on friday, due to a tight timeline. Then on the following monday Journal Graphics responded saying that they refuse to publish the magazine at all. Resulting in almost a full week of production time lost - possibly resulting in the magazine not meeting the deadline of the event audience intended. We are now looking for a responsible and up-front and honest printer open to FREEDOM OF SPEECH. We will never use this company again.

I would not recommend anyone support this business on the grounds of poor business practice and a vague written policy of what they will and will not print. A friend and colleague recently edited a community funded, not for profit arts magazine that was due to be printed by Journal Graphics. They entered into a written contract with Journal Graphics and paid for the job in advance.
With a fixed deadline for going to press in order to distribute the magazine as planned, 5 days before printing day, Journal Graphics provided the editors with a hard copy proof of the magazine and made no requests for major changes. Three days before press, Journal Graphics contacted the editors again and informed them that they in fact would not print the magazine unless several curse words were removed, and two renderings of planned art works that included sketches of female nipples be blurred to obscure this apparently offensive aspect of the female anatomy.
This notification arrived late during the day on a Friday, with the printing deadline being the following Monday. Despite their dismay and anger over this sudden demand to censor their publication at the last moment, and feeling like they had no other choice as they were up against a weekend with a Monday print deadline, the editors succumbed to the requests and censored their publication and resubmitted it.
This apparently was not sufficient compliance for Journal Graphics, who then informed them that in fact they still could not print the magazine. The publication was due for distribution one week later. Whilst Journal Graphics is in the process of refunding the money they took for the job, this is small comfort to a group of hard working, volunteer editors trying to fulfil a promise to distribute their publication to their supporters and funders within a week.
On their website, Journal Graphics does state that they will not print anything considered "obscene", but this does not explain their willingness to give the impression that all was well by providing a hard copy proof with no requests for changes, only to then go back on this a few days later. As a small business owner myself, I for one am not impressed with this type of customer service.

This is a despicable company. My friends tried to print their Burning Man culture magazine with them. Journal Graphics took their money, approved their proof, and then a week before they needed their 3000 copies of a 52 page magazine they told them they wouldn't print because of the "curse words" and a few topless people. Screw CENSORSHIP. If it was their policy to only print text fit for children then they should have stated it. Instead they took their money then waited until they had no other option to find another printer. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THEM

I am completely appalled at this unprofessional and judgmental company. I assisted with creating a small free magazine with team of volunteers, and we were all lined up to support this small local company with a large order of thousands of magazines. We had fundraised profusely to be able to pay for this order, and all of the magazines were to be distributed for free.
Just before the order was scheduled to be printed we were informed that there were curse words and nipples they would not print it unless we removed both. (What? Are we back in 1952? Did I miss something?) We stayed up all night making their edits, and when we sent back the updated files were informed that they would not print our magazine AT ALL.
This IS NOT an inappropriate, offensive, or pornagraphic magazine at all, but even if it were, it is not okay to lie to customers and tell them that a business will do something (print thousands of magazines if edits are made) and then still refuse after the necessary changes are made. Please do not give this company any business, they do not deserve to stay in business if they would lie like this.
